Brazilian Wax Aftercare: What We Tell Every Client
For the first day or two after a Brazilian wax, wear loose clothing and skip hot tubs, saunas, intense workouts, and direct sun. After a few days, start exfoliating gently and moisturizing. That is most of Brazilian wax aftercare, and it is what helps keep ingrown hairs away as the hair grows back.
We're the licensed estheticians at Mysa Day Spa in West Portal, San Francisco, and this is what we tell every client after a Brazilian. Here is the whole cycle, from wax day to your next appointment.

The cycle loops: what you do in the first few days sets up how smooth the next wax goes.
Right After Your WaxWhat to do after a Brazilian wax
Good Brazilian wax aftercare is short and a little boring, which is the point. After your wax:
- Wear loose clothing. Tight underwear and leggings rub freshly waxed skin. Loose, breathable layers give it room to settle.
- Leave it alone. Some redness and small bumps right after a wax are common. Picking or scratching is what turns them into something that lingers.
- After a few days, exfoliate gently. This clears the dead skin that can trap hair as it grows back. Gentle means a soft cloth or a mild exfoliant, not a scrub you would use on your feet.
- Moisturize. Soft skin makes it easier for regrowing hair to come through the surface instead of curling under it.
- Let the hair grow out. Put the razor away between appointments. Your next wax needs about a quarter inch of hair to grip.
What not to do after a Brazilian wax
For the first day or two, freshly waxed skin is more easily irritated, so a few everyday things are worth putting off.
| Skip for a day or two | Why |
|---|---|
| Hot tubs and saunas | Heat and moisture on freshly waxed skin invite irritation. |
| Intense workouts | Sweat and friction in the same spot, at the worst time. |
| Direct sun | Newly waxed skin is more sensitive and easier to irritate. |
| Tight clothing | Constant rubbing on skin that is still settling. |
Two more that last longer than a day or two:
- Don't shave between waxes. Shaving cuts the hair short, and your next wax cannot grip hair shorter than about a quarter inch.
- Don't pick at bumps or ingrowns. It can leave dark marks behind that last far longer than the bump would have.
Bumps, redness, and itching after a Brazilian wax
Red bumps after a Brazilian wax are common, and most of the time they are your skin reacting to having hair pulled from the root. The aftercare above is usually all they need.
| Usually normal | See a doctor |
|---|---|
| Redness and small red bumps right after the wax, settling down as the days pass | Redness that spreads instead of fading |
| Mild tenderness in the first day or two | A painful, swollen lump, or bumps that fill with pus |
| Itching as the hair starts to grow back | Fever, or bumps that get worse instead of better |
For itching, moisturize rather than scratch. Scratching freshly waxed skin is how small bumps become irritated ones.
If anything in the right-hand column shows up, see your doctor rather than waiting it out.
PreventionHow to prevent ingrown hairs after waxing
An ingrown hair is a hair that curls back into the skin instead of growing out through it. Hair in the bikini area is coarse and curly, which makes it more prone to this than most places on the body. Most of preventing ingrowns comes down to keeping the surface soft and clear so regrowing hair has a way out.
Exfoliate gently, starting a few days after your wax. Dead skin that builds up on top is what traps hair underneath. Gentle and regular beats hard and occasional.
Moisturize. Dry, tight skin is harder for new hair to push through.
Wear loose clothing. Friction presses hair back against the skin as it grows.
Keep the razor away between waxes. Shaving leaves a blunt tip that is more likely to curl back in, and it resets the hair length your next wax needs.
Stay on a regular wax schedule. A wax lasts about three to four weeks, and booking on that rhythm keeps you from reaching for the razor in between.
None of this makes ingrowns impossible. It makes them less frequent.
When It Happens AnywayWhen ingrown hairs show up anyway
Even with good aftercare, some ingrowns will happen. When they do, resist the urge to dig them out. Picking breaks the skin, and in the bikini area it often leaves a dark mark that outlasts the ingrown itself.
This is what a vajacial is for. It is a facial for the bikini area: a gentle cleanse, a mild enzyme exfoliant, ingrown hairs released by hand, then a mask and a brightening serum or spot treatment where there is darkening. It treats the external skin only.
You can book a vajacial on its own, or add it to your next Brazilian. When you book both, we do the wax first and the vajacial after, so the exfoliation and extraction work on freshly cleared skin.
To be honest about what it does: one visit clears the ingrowns that are there now. It does not stop new ones from ever forming, which is why regular visits, and the aftercare above, still matter.

How long until your next wax?
A Brazilian wax usually lasts about three to four weeks. Because waxing removes hair from the root, it grows back on your natural cycle instead of as next-day stubble.
For your next appointment, the hair needs to be about a quarter inch long, roughly two to three weeks of growth, so the wax can grip it. That is the main reason to skip shaving in between: shaved hair is too short to wax, and you end up waiting longer.
The good news for regulars is that it gets easier. Waxing stings a little, but it gets easier each time as hair grows back finer.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work out after a Brazilian wax?
Skip intense workouts for a day or two. Sweat and friction on freshly waxed skin are an easy route to irritation.
Can I use a hot tub or sauna after waxing?
Not for the first day or two. Give the skin time to settle before the heat.
Can I go in the sun after a Brazilian?
Avoid direct sun for a day or two. Newly waxed skin is more sensitive.
When can I start exfoliating?
After a few days. Keep it gentle, and keep it regular, to help prevent ingrown hairs.
Should I shave between waxes?
No. Shaved hair is too short for your next wax to grip, which needs about a quarter inch of growth.
Can I get a Brazilian wax while pregnant?
Many clients continue waxing through pregnancy. Skin can be more sensitive, so we confirm at your consultation that it is right for you that day.
How much is a Brazilian wax at Mysa?
$90 for a 30-minute appointment, offered to female clients. A standard bikini is $40 and an extended bikini is $60.
