A massage that works with your body’s own pathways

Most massages work on muscle. This one works on movement.

The Mysa Eastern Renewal Massage is inspired by Traditional Chinese wellness practices, which describe the body as a network of natural energy pathways known as meridians. Rather than working into a single tight shoulder or a knot in your lower back, this treatment follows those pathways across the body, using gentle flowing techniques to encourage circulation and help everything move the way it is supposed to.

The result is a calmer, quieter kind of bodywork. It is not deep tissue, and it is not trying to be. Guests tell us they leave feeling lighter, refreshed, and deeply relaxed, which is exactly what we designed it to do.

The ritual

What happens during your treatment

Here is the whole sequence, start to finish, so nothing is a surprise.

01

We begin at the back

Your therapist starts with warm oil across the back, then settles into steady, flowing work across the large muscles of the back and shoulders.

02

We move to the arms

Both arms, then shoulders and the full back again, working outward along the pathways rather than pressing into one spot.

03

We work the meridian channels

The heart of the treatment. Comfortable, targeted pressure at specific points along the body’s energy pathways — rolling, kneading, and lighter rhythmic movements rather than deep sustained pressure.

04

In the 80 minute session, we continue to the legs and feet

Roughly fifteen minutes of dedicated lower body work, following the same pathways down.

05

We finish with the brush

A soft brush is drawn along the meridian points across the back, arms, and legs. This is the step guests remember and the step nobody expects. It creates a spreading, comfortable warmth, and it is how the treatment closes.

Throughout, the pressure stays gentle. If you want more or less at any point, say so. Your therapist will ask before beginning and will check in as she goes.

Choosing a length

50 minutes or 80 minutes?

Most spas sell a longer session as a deeper one. Ours is different in a more useful way — the two lengths cover different amounts of your body, at the same gentle pressure.

Best for
Desk and screen tension, first visits, a focused reset
A complete head to toe reset, and guests who carry tension in the legs and feet

Not sure which to book? If most of your tension sits above the waist, or if this is your first Eastern Renewal Massage, the 50 minute session is a good place to start. If you are on your feet all day, walk the city, or simply want the full sequence including the leg work, book the 80.

What to expect on the table

We would rather tell you this in advance than surprise you.

As the targeted meridian techniques and the finishing brush work awaken the body’s natural warmth, you may feel a spreading heat across the areas being worked. Some guests also notice temporary redness on the skin. This is a normal response to the technique. It is not a burn and it is not an irritation, and it typically fades by the end of the session.

If it doesn’t settle

Tell your therapist and we will adjust. Nothing about this treatment should feel like something you are enduring.

The benefits

What guests come back for

Encouraged circulation

Through targeted meridian work and the finishing brush.

Lymphatic support

From long, directional flowing strokes along the pathways.

Tension release

Across the back, shoulders, and arms.

Restored balance

Full pathway work rather than spot treatment.

Deep relaxation

At a gentle, unhurried pace, start to finish.

Renewed energy

A lighter feeling that lasts past the appointment.

Being honest about what this massage does

We would rather set the right expectation than oversell.

One visit is a start

This treatment will not remove every bit of tension you are carrying, and you will not walk out a different person. Tension that took months to build usually takes more than one visit to unwind. Guests who come regularly see the most change.

It is not a weight loss treatment

Neither this nor lymphatic drainage will change the number on a scale, whatever the internet says. What it can do is help you feel lighter, looser, and less inflamed.

It is not medical care

If you are dealing with persistent pain or a health concern that has not been looked at, please see a doctor. Massage can support how you feel. It is not a substitute for medical care, and we will always tell you so.

6
Hours, no shower

Why we ask you not to shower for 6 hours

This is the question guests ask most, so here is the reasoning. The treatment encourages warmth and circulation throughout the body, and that response keeps working after you leave us. Rinsing off too soon cuts the process short. Giving your body the full window lets it absorb the benefits of the ritual rather than washing them away.

Plan for it when you book. If you have somewhere to be that evening, an earlier appointment gives you room.

Drink plenty of water afterward, more than you think you need
If you want warmth, use a warm compress or warm water rather than a shower
Skip alcohol for the rest of the day
Keep the evening gentle if you can

Your first visit

If you have never had a massage with us, here is exactly how it goes.

Arrive about five minutes early so you have time for the intake form without feeling rushed. Have some water or a chocolate while you wait. Your therapist will bring you back to the room and walk you through the treatment before anything begins.

Once you are settled on the table, she will ask two questions: how firm you would like the pressure, and whether there is any area you would prefer she avoid. Those answers are yours to change at any point during the session.

What to wear

Most guests undress completely for a massage, and some prefer to keep underwear on. Either is fine, and you will be draped throughout. We do recommend removing your bra so the back and shoulder work is uninterrupted.

Before you come in

There is nothing you need to do to prepare. We would only suggest not eating a large meal right beforehand, since lying face down on a full stomach is less comfortable than it sounds.

Where it came from

Developed here in West Portal

The Eastern Renewal Massage did not come from a training manual. It was created here at Mysa by one of our senior licensed massage therapists, who grew up in China and brought this style of bodywork with her.

It is built on the traditional understanding that health depends on smooth, unblocked flow through the body’s channels, and that pain and fatigue follow when those pathways stall. The rolling, kneading, and brush work all come from that tradition, adapted over time to what actually worked for our guests here in San Francisco.

Every licensed therapist on our team is now trained in the ritual, so you can book it whenever it suits your schedule. It is not a treatment you will find on most San Francisco spa menus, and we are proud that it started in our rooms on W Portal Avenue.

From our massage therapists

“Health depends on flow. When the pathways stall, pain and fatigue follow.”

Frequently asked questions

What is the Eastern Renewal Massage?

A therapeutic massage inspired by Traditional Chinese wellness practices, focused on the body’s natural energy pathways known as meridians. Gentle flowing techniques encourage relaxation, support lymphatic movement, and help restore balance. We offer it in 50 and 80 minute sessions.

How is it different from a Swedish or deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue works into specific muscles with firm, sustained pressure. Swedish focuses on general relaxation through the soft tissue. This follows the meridian pathways with gentle, directional strokes and finishes with brush work along those same points. Closer to Swedish in pressure, quite different in intention.

Should I book the 50 minute or the 80 minute session?

The 50 covers your back, shoulders, and arms. The 80 adds about fifteen minutes of leg and foot work for full body coverage. Both use the same gentle pressure. If most of your tension sits above the waist, or this is your first time, start with the 50.

Is it normal to feel warm or see redness during the treatment?

Yes. The meridian techniques and the finishing brush work awaken the body’s natural warmth, and some guests notice temporary redness where the work is being done. It typically fades by the end of the session. Tell your therapist if anything feels uncomfortable.

Why can’t I shower for 6 hours afterward?

The treatment encourages circulation and warmth that keep working after your appointment ends. Waiting 6 hours gives your body time to absorb the benefits of the ritual instead of rinsing them away. Warm water or a warm compress is fine in the meantime.

How often should I book it?

For tension you have been carrying a while, our therapists suggest every two weeks at first, then settling into a monthly rhythm once things ease. If you are booking for relaxation rather than a specific concern, come whenever you need it.

Who should avoid this massage?

We will ask you to wait if you are unwell or have any active infection, or if you have a skin condition, irritation, or infection in the areas we would be working. If you have had recent surgery, please bring your doctor’s clearance. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, we would steer you toward our Prenatal Massage instead, which is designed around side lying comfort.

Do you have any guidance on tipping?

Gratuity is entirely optional and always appreciated. You can tip in cash or add 15, 20, or 25 percent at checkout.
