Best Facial for Aging Skin: A San Francisco Esthetician’s Honest Guide
We're Gabbie and Amy — licensed estheticians and ProCell-certified providers at Mysa Day Spa in San Francisco's West Portal. Between us, we've performed thousands of professional facials: HydraFacials, Glo2, chemical peels, LED, microchanneling. Clients ask us some version of the same question every week: which one actually works for aging skin?
If you've searched that question online, you've probably noticed something frustrating — the first page is mostly serums and moisturizers. Helpful if you want to buy a jar of cream. Not if you're trying to decide which in-office treatment moves the needle on wrinkles, laxity, and tone.
So here's the guide we wish existed: an honest comparison of every professional facial we offer, what each one does and doesn't do, and which one we'd recommend for aging concerns in your 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond. We're comparing in-office professional treatments only — not creams, not serums, not at-home devices. The real anti-aging leverage is in the chair.

TL;DR — The short version
- Aging skin has 4 distinct problems — no single facial solves all of them.
- HydraFacial and Glo2 are excellent for surface glow and maintenance (30s–40s).
- Chemical peels are the strongest in-office option for pigmentation and sun damage.
- For wrinkles, laxity, and structural aging (50s+), the Regenerative Facial is the only in-office treatment that works at the dermal layer.
- Most mature skin benefits from stacking: Regenerative Facial series + monthly HydraFacial + consistent home regimen.

The honest truth about "anti-aging" facials
Aging skin is not one problem. It's a stack of four different problems that show up together:
- Collagen and elastin depletion — the scaffolding thins, so skin sags and softens.
- Cell turnover slows — dead cells pile up, dulling the surface and making fine lines more visible.
- Hyperpigmentation builds — decades of sun, hormones, and inflammation leave their receipts.
- Hydration capacity drops — the skin's ability to hold water declines, so everything looks tired.
No single facial fixes all four equally well. The "best" facial for you is the one that matches what's actually happening in your skin right now. A 42-year-old fighting early fine lines needs a very different protocol than a 68-year-old with deep wrinkles and sun damage.
This is why we start every consultation with a skin analysis, not a menu.
The five facials we evaluate for aging skin
What it does: A three-step protocol — cleanse and exfoliate, extract, infuse — using a vortex suction wand and a rotating set of serums. It's the Swiss Army knife of facials.
What it's best for: Surface-level concerns. Dullness, congestion, uneven texture, dehydration, early fine lines. Also the safest "I have an event on Saturday" facial — genuinely zero downtime.
What it doesn't do: It won't meaningfully affect deep wrinkles, loss of firmness, or volume loss. The collagen response is minimal compared to treatments that work at the dermal layer.
Cost at Mysa: See current pricing on our HydraFacial service page.
If you're in your 30s or early 40s and your main concern is "my skin looks tired," HydraFacial is a reasonable monthly maintenance treatment. If you're past 50 and chasing serious structural aging, it won't be enough on its own — but it pairs beautifully with heavier treatments.
What it does: Three phases in one — capsugen exfoliation, oxygenating lactic acid activation, and ultrasound-driven serum infusion. The result is a brightening, lightly plumping treatment with a distinctive fizzing sensation.
What it's best for: Dull, dehydrated, tired-looking skin that needs an immediate glow. Particularly good for clients who want visible results before a wedding, reunion, or photoshoot — without the redness of a peel.
What it doesn't do: Like HydraFacial, Glo2 works primarily at the surface. It's not a collagen-building treatment in any serious sense. Don't expect it to resolve deep wrinkles or laxity.
Cost at Mysa: See our Glo2 Facial page.
Our go-to for clients who want a refresh before an event, or for maintaining a glow between heavier treatments. For aging skin specifically, we recommend it as a supporting treatment — not the main act.
What they do: A professional-strength acid (glycolic, salicylic, lactic, TCA, or blended) resurfaces the skin, triggering controlled exfoliation and stimulating a modest collagen response.
What they're best for: Hyperpigmentation, uneven tone, sun damage, surface lines, and texture. Medium-depth peels can meaningfully improve skin clarity and reflectivity. Mature skin holding onto stubborn melasma or sun spots often responds well.
What they don't do: Even a medium-depth peel only works on the upper layers of skin. It will not replace what's happening structurally in the dermis. Deep wrinkles and laxity are not a peel's strength.
Downtime: Depends on peel depth. A light superficial peel has minimal downtime. A medium-depth peel can produce visible shedding for 5–7 days.
Cost at Mysa: Peels are built into several of our facial protocols; your esthetician will customize the right depth based on your skin.
For pigmentation and tone, peels are one of the most efficient treatments available outside a medical office. For structural aging, they're a supporting player. We often pair peels with collagen-building treatments in a multi-month plan.
What it does: Specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light penetrate the skin and stimulate cellular activity — including some collagen response and a reduction in inflammation.
What it doesn't do: On its own, LED is not going to produce dramatic results on established wrinkles or deep laxity. Think of it as a collagen assist, not a collagen engine.
Cost at Mysa: LED is included as a complementary step in our Regenerative Facial and can be added to most treatments. Ask your esthetician.
LED is a quiet multiplier. It rarely works wonders as a standalone for aging skin, but it elevates almost every other treatment we stack it with. This is why we build it into our microchanneling protocol by default.
This is the one we reach for when a client is serious about structural anti-aging — and it's why we wrote this article.
What it does: A clinical-grade ProCell microchanneling device creates thousands of microscopic channels in the upper skin. While those channels are open, we infuse custom-blended stem cell growth factor serums — signaling proteins your immune system uses to rebuild tissue. Serums absorb 200–300% more effectively than on intact skin, and your body launches an accelerated collagen and elastin response that continues for weeks.
What it's best for: Fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring, skin laxity, hyperpigmentation, and overall firmness. It works at the dermal layer — where structural aging actually happens.
The treatment is safe for all skin types and tones — including deeper complexions that can't tolerate aggressive resurfacing. For clients over 40, we use the MD-strength ProCell serum, which carries double the concentration of growth factors specifically formulated for skin that has lost more of its natural signaling proteins with age.
The collagen response doesn't peak at the appointment — it builds for 3–4 weeks afterward, and each session in a series compounds on the last. That cumulative effect is what makes a series of 3–6 treatments meaningfully more powerful than a single session.
"This is the difference between polishing the floor and reinforcing the foundation."
What it doesn't do: It won't replace surgical or injectable interventions for deep volume loss. We'll tell you honestly at your consultation what's realistic for your skin.
Downtime: Redness comparable to a moderate sunburn for 4–24 hours; up to 72 hours for longer needle lengths. No makeup the day of. Mineral makeup is safe the following day for most clients.
Cost at Mysa: $398 per session. Purchase 3 sessions ($1,194) and receive 3 complimentary neck treatments (a $750 value).

If you're asking "what's the one treatment that has actually moved the needle on aging skin in our treatment room," this is the answer. We've seen a 70-year-old client achieve approximately 60% improvement in deep wrinkles after 2 sessions. We've seen a 21-year-old achieve approximately 70% improvement in acne scars over 7 sessions. For most aging concerns, we recommend a series of 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, followed by maintenance every 3–4 months.

The best facial for aging skin by decade
In your 40s
This is when most clients first notice: "something is different." Early fine lines, slight loss of glow, hyperpigmentation from a decade of sun. Monthly HydraFacials or Glo2, with 1–2 chemical peels a year to stay ahead of pigmentation. Consider a short Regenerative Facial series as a preventive investment.
At home: SPF every morning without exception, a retinoid at night, and a growth factor serum in the morning. Jan Marini or Face Reality are the lines we trust.
In your 50s
Collagen depletion accelerates through menopause. A monthly maintenance facial is no longer enough on its own. We typically recommend a series of 3–6 Regenerative Facial sessions to rebuild structure, followed by monthly HydraFacials or Glo2 for maintenance. Chemical peels remain useful for tone.
At home: Commit to a growth factor serum morning and night — not just as a booster. Pair with SPF, a retinoid (if your skin tolerates it), and a barrier-supporting moisturizer.
In your 60s
This is where the Regenerative Facial earns its name. We've seen genuinely dramatic improvements in deep wrinkles in this age bracket, often within 2–3 sessions. The protocol we run most often: a 3–6 session series, LED included, with Jan Marini Skin Research growth factor serums for home maintenance.
In your 70s and beyond
Skin repairs more slowly, but it still repairs. One of our favorite client stories is a 70-year-old who achieved approximately 60% improvement in her deep wrinkles after just two Regenerative Facial sessions. We plan these cases with more recovery time between sessions and extra attention to barrier care — but the treatment still works.
If you're wondering whether you're "too late" — you're not.

70-year-old client, deep wrinkles — approximately 60% improvement in 2 sessions. Faster than we expected for wrinkles at that depth. We typically plan 3–4 sessions for comparable results.
of 4
60s client, skin laxity and loss of firmness — visible tightening after session 2, significant structural improvement after a full series of 4. Her words: "I didn't think a facial could do this."
sessions
50s client, fine lines and dullness — visible glow after 1 session, measurable wrinkle reduction after 3. A fast responder in the easier-to-treat category.
21-year-old client, moderate-to-severe acne scarring — approximately 70% improvement over 7 sessions. Scar tissue is denser, so it takes more treatments. The cumulative result was dramatic.
The pattern is consistent across skin types: fine lines respond fastest, laxity and firmness follow, hyperpigmentation takes the longest.
How we stack treatments: a real anti-aging protocol
- Month 1: Consultation + HydraFacial to reset the surface and evaluate your skin.
- Months 2–7: A series of 3–6 Regenerative Facials spaced 4–6 weeks apart, LED included, with a custom serum blend based on your primary concern.
- Between sessions: HydraFacial or Signature Facial every 4 weeks for maintenance.
- Ongoing: Jan Marini or Face Reality home regimen. Monthly maintenance facial. Regenerative Facial touch-ups every 3–4 months.
This is not the cheapest protocol on the market. It is, in our experience, the one that produces results worth talking about.
Who shouldn't pursue aggressive anti-aging treatments
Honesty first:
- Active acne or rosacea flare-ups — wait until the skin has calmed.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding — growth factors are not recommended.
- Recent Accutane use — skin remains fragile for at least 6 months post-course.
- Sunburned or recently sun-exposed skin — the barrier is already compromised.
- Brand-new clients — we start with a Signature Facial or HydraFacial first to evaluate your skin before recommending something more intensive.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the single best facial for aging skin?
For structural aging — wrinkles, laxity, loss of firmness — the Mysa Regenerative Facial (ProCell microchanneling with stem cell growth factors) is the treatment we reach for most often. For tone and pigmentation, chemical peels are hard to beat. Most mature skin benefits from a combination.
How often should I get a facial for aging skin?
Maintenance facials (HydraFacial, Glo2): monthly. Collagen-building series (Regenerative Facial): every 4–6 weeks for 3–6 sessions, then maintenance every 3–4 months.
What's the best anti-aging facial if I'm on a budget?
A consistent monthly HydraFacial plus a diligent at-home regimen (SPF, retinoid at night, growth factor serum in the morning) will outperform sporadic expensive treatments. Consistency beats intensity. Most clients find a monthly HydraFacial at Mysa costs less than what they spend on retail products.
When should I start professional anti-aging facials?
There's no magic age. Most clients start seeing the earliest signs — fine lines, reduced glow — in their mid-to-late 30s. Starting early with prevention is easier than reversing established damage.
Can I combine facials?
Yes, and we often do. HydraFacial or Signature Facial between Regenerative Facial sessions is one of our most common protocols. Don't stack treatments without guidance — some combinations are counterproductive.
Is microchanneling safer than microneedling?
At our spa, yes. The ProCell platform uses a stamping mechanism that creates cleaner, more uniform channels than a rolling needle — less surface trauma, faster recovery, and better serum delivery.
How fast will I see anti-aging results?
You'll see an immediate glow within days of most treatments. Structural improvement — wrinkle reduction, firming — typically peaks 4–6 weeks after a Regenerative Facial session, which is why we schedule the next session at that interval.
Ready to find your best anti-aging facial?
The right facial for your skin depends on what's actually happening underneath it — and we can tell you more in a 20-minute consultation than any article can. Most new clients start with a complimentary skin analysis: no commitment, just clarity on what your skin actually needs and a treatment plan built around your concerns and your life.
